Customer Classifications
This article defines Kaplan’s Customer Classifications, as used in PeopleSoft under: Sub Customer 1 (main classification) & Sub Customer 2 (subclassification) These values help align pricing, reporting, tax handling, and sales/service strategies. They are also used for the Quick Customer Create templates to populate relevant fields on the customer master.
Customer Classifications (Sub Customer 1 & Sub Customer 2) – Definitions and Usage

- Sub Customer 1 (main classification)
- Sub Customer 2 (subclassification)
These values help align pricing, reporting, tax handling, and sales/service strategies.
- Overview of Customer Classifications
Main classification groups (Sub Customer 1):
- Daycare (DC)
- Schools (SC)
- Vertical Market (VM)
- Government (GO)
Each group has one or more Sub Customer 2 codes to further define the customer type.
- Daycare (DC)
Sub Customer 1: DC
Used for early childhood care and education providers that are not primarily K–12 schools.
3.1 DC / CH – Daycare Chains
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: DC
- Sub Customer 2: CH
- Definition:
Large daycare or early learning chains with multiple sites under a common organization/brand. - Examples:
Regional or national daycare brands operating multiple centers.
3.2 DC / IC – Independent Centers
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: DC
- Sub Customer 2: IC
- Definition:
- Independent centers
- Church-affiliated centers
- Family childcare centers (home-based providers)
- Examples:
Single-site centers, church-based preschools, licensed family childcare homes.
3.3 DC / HD – Head Start Customers
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: DC
- Sub Customer 2: HD
- Definition:
All Head Start customers purchasing for Head Start or Early Head Start programs. - Notes:
Use when the customer is clearly identified as a Head Start program (even if center-based).
3.4 DC / RR – Resource and Referral Agencies
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: DC
- Sub Customer 2: RR
- Definition:
Resource & Referral agencies that support childcare providers and families.
3.5 DC / YY – YMCA / YWCA
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: DC
- Sub Customer 2: YY
- Definition:
YMCA and YWCA organizations, often operating childcare or youth programs.
- Schools (SC)
Sub Customer 1: SC
Used for K–12 and related school organizations.
4.1 SC / DP – Public Schools & Related
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: SC
- Sub Customer 2: DP
- Definition:
- All public schools (districts and individual schools)
- PTA/PTO organizations tied to public schools
4.2 SC / PR – Private Schools
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: SC
- Sub Customer 2: PR
- Definition:
- All private schools, including church-affiliated schools
4.3 SC / CS – Charter Schools
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: SC
- Sub Customer 2: CS
- Definition:
- Charter schools, regardless of whether they are district-authorized or independent.
4.4 SC / HS – Home Schools
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: SC
- Sub Customer 2: HS
- Definition:
- Home school customers purchasing for home education programs.
- Vertical Market (VM)
Sub Customer 1: VM
Used for markets outside traditional daycare/school/government segments.
5.1 VM / CU – Colleges and Universities

- Definition:
- Colleges and universities, including community colleges and higher-ed programs.
5.2 VM / RT – Retail
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: VM
- Sub Customer 2: RT
- Definition:
- Retail accounts (stores and similar retail outlets).
5.3 VM / IN – Individuals
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: VM
- Sub Customer 2: IN
- Definition:
- Individual consumers purchasing as individuals rather than organizations.
5.4 VM / EA – Employee Accounts

Used for government entities at federal, state, and local levels, and certain military-based programs.
6.1 GO / FE – Federal Government (Non-Daycare)

- Definition:
- All federal government accounts, except federal-based day cares.
- Examples:
- Prisons
- BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs)
- FBI
6.2 GO / SL – State / County / City
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: GO
- Sub Customer 2: SL
- Definition:
- State, county, city, and other non-federal government accounts.
6.3 GO / GS – GSA Accounts
- Code:
- Sub Customer 1: GO
- Sub Customer 2: GS
- Definition:
- GSA accounts that qualify for GSA pricing, including:
- General Services Administration
- IRS
- Social Security Administration (SSA)
- DFAS, and similar agencies.
